Dr. Tony Marinho

Dr Tony Marinho is a practicing obstetrician and gynaecologist from Lagos, Nigeria with Irish ancestry. He is an established writer, poet, playwright, photography and songwriter. His creative works include over 20 books, more than 10,000 photographs and a large collection of poetry, prose and songs.

Tony Marinho is a medal winning medical graduate of the University of Ibadan where he was regularly on stage at the Arts Theatre. He served Youth Corps in Plateau State where he wrote his first book - The Victim. He did post graduate training at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. From there he spent all his working life in and around Ibadan, as Associate lecturer and Consultant gynaecologist. He attended St Gregory’s College, Ikoyi Lagos where he became Head Boy in 1967.

He has played an active role in the Association of Nigerian Authors and is the author of several books for children, novels and two collections of poetry. He is also responsible for writing a play, Why UI? which was successfully performed at the Arts Theatre, University of Ibadan in 1999. Tony Marinho is a social critic, writing regularly in the press on issues and addressing public fora around the country and abroad. He runs a weekly column in ‘The Nation’ on Wednesday speaking the mind of millions.

One of Tony Marinho’s passions is in youth development as demonstrated in his books for children, the Bobo books on school reading booklists and his work over the years through Educare Trust, an NGO he founded in October 1994 with other like minds. The trust focuses on education and health care for the youth and has successfully enriched the minds of thousands of children with technology, science, art and personal healthcare.

In 2014, a three-in-one public dissemination of his considerable creative Literary/Artwork called: ‘You Don’t Know Me- Tony Marinho’ was produced by Board Members Entertainment. The events included;

• A 60 PhotoArt exhibition: Tony Marinho’s Doctored PhotoArt of ‘doctored’ work.
• You Don’t Know Me Show: A multi-media performance of Stage Plays, a Short Movie, Prose, Poetry and Music based on his books.
• ‘You Don’t Know Me-Tony Marinho ’ Matinée for children: The experience of ‘You Don’t Know Me’ was to ‘Light A Fire’ to encourage others to step out of their professional box, nurture and capture their creativity.

In 2016, an event called Edutainment with Bobo comprising of stage plays based on his books; Bobo Learns to Fly and Bobo & the Flying Crab along with a science exhibition for school children was successfully produced in Lekki, Lagos.
